PURE RECYCLING PROGRAM

Q: How does the PURE recycling program work?
A: The PURE recycling program was developed at the request of a customer that did not want to add cartridges to the landfill. The program is completely optional. It is only available to U.S. customers and cartridges that were fed from a potable or pure water source. Complete the statement of use label and affix it to your box along with the shipping label. Customers are responsible for shipping costs.

Q: What cartridges can be sent back for recycling?
A: We accept all cartridges from Type I systems as long as they have had either a potable or pure water source.

Q: What does Barnstead International do with the cartridges?
A: The cartridges are shipped to a recycling company that is completely separate from Barnstead International. Barnstead cartridges are made from virgin resin to ensure the highest water quality.

Q: Who is responsible for the shipping of the cartridges?
A: Because the PURE program is optional and the recycling plant is a separate company from Barnstead International, the customer is responsible for the shipping and handling expense.

Q: Where do I send the cartridges?
A: BFI, 1755 Radford Rd. Dubuque, IA 52002

OEM

Q: How do I become an OEM customer?
A: OEM customers need to fill out an application found in the OEM section of this Website. We will need company information and a description of what you want to buy on an OEM basis.

REFRIGERATORS/FREEZERS

Q: What is the difference between Explosion Proof and Flammable Material Storage?
A: Explosion Proof refrigerators have the electrical components removed to the exterior and are sealed for use within environments that contain Class 1, Group C and D chemicals. You can also store chemicals in an explosion proof unit.

Flammable Material Storage units have the electrical components relocated to the exterior and only the compressor is sealed for storage only of Class 1, Group C and D chemicals.

Q: Where is the thermostat located on an Explosion Proof Refrigerator/Freezer?
A: The thermostat is located on the back of the unit in a Killark box. You need to remove the cover to locate the thermostat, and replace the cover to the box once you have adjusted the temperature.

Q: What are the differences between the defrost cycles?
A: Automatic Defrost: Units with automatic defrost have a defrost timer and an electric heater by the coil. The defrost timer stops the refrigeration and turns on the heater by the coil. The defrost timer is factory set to start. The defrost cycle is then terminated by a sensor when the coil is free of ice. Off Cycle Defrost (sometimes also called Automatic Defrost): This type of unit has no defrost timer or heaters. It operates on the basis of the refrigerator operating at a temperature high enough to defrost the coil when the compressor is not running. It is recommended to increase the temperature of the unit if the coil has a build up of ice. Manual Defrost: This type of defrost requires the customer to turn off the unit and allow the coils to thaw at room temperature.

Q: What type of cordset do the explosion proof refrigerators and freezers come with?
A: They are not supplied with a cordset. They must be hardwired to maintain their explosion proof rating.

Q: I need parts for my refrigerator/freezer. Where and how can I order parts?
A: Parts are available through Lab-Line if the unit is 10 years older or less. We need a description of the part (i.e., compressor, evaporator, t-state). We will need catalog number, serial number, and box or code number. Catalog number and serial number are on the outside of the unit on a Lab-Line sticker. Code number should be right below. If no code number, look inside on kick plate or interior wall for a box number.

BARNSTEAD CARTRIDGES

Q: What is the shelf life on replacement cartridges?
A: Two year shelf life from date of manufacture if properly stored.

HEATING TAPES

Q: Do I need a controller for heating tapes?
A: Yes, depending on the voltage.

INCUBATOR SHAKERS

Q: I have a model 3527 Environmental Shaker that needs a new motor. The serial number off of this unit is 1192-0034. Do you have a part number for a new motor?
A: Is the color of the motor in the unit black or silver? If it is a black motor, that motor is no longer available. This also pertains to the motor brushes as well. You need to purchase a retrofit kit, part number 018-277-00. This kit comes with a new motor, a mounting bracket for the motor, and instructions on how to install these parts into the shaker. If the motor is silver, this has already been done at some time. You would need part number 370-344-00.

INCUBATORS

Q: I have a model 397 CO2 incubator with a serial number of 0498-0004. I cannot get the CO2 display to stabilize. The unit's CO2 is set at 15% and the display is bouncing around. One minute it will display 3%; the next it will display 28%. I have checked the unit against a fyrite and the fyrite is saying 15% CO2, which is what we have it set at. What is the problem?
A: The failure is due to a faulty CO2 sensor. This item needs to be replaced. It has a part number of 017-924-00.

Q: How much water do I need for my water jacketed CO2 incubator and what quality?
A: 10.7 gallons or 40.5 liters. The resistivity should be between 500 K ohms and 1 M ohm.

Q: Do you have a CO2 incubator that can automatically control humidity?
A: Yes. Models 393, 393-1, 393-2, and 393-3 are the only units that can control the humidity.

OVENS

Q: What is the part number for the thermometer used with your low cost ovens?
A: 910-136-00. Thermometer, -20 to 150°C, 76mm immersion, 305mm length Ð spirit filled.

STERILIZERS

Q: Can I run a flash cycle with my Chemiclave?
A: No. The chemiclave can only run a 20 min. exposure cycle.

NCAT FURNACE

Q: What type of exhaust tubing can be used with the NCAT?
A: We recommend 3" ID flexible seamless stainless steel (SS) or galvanized steel. DO NOT USE GALVANIZED TIN. Our part number is TU859X1 for 10ft. SS.

Q: Where are the balance on/off and balance and enter keys?
A: They are four small holes on the front panel below the balance display. On Setra scales the right hole is the balance on/off key and the left hole is balance enter key. The middle two are not used. On Ohaus scales the holes from left to right are Print, Mode Off, and On/Tare.

Q: What is the difference between the 1087 series and 859/945 series?
A: The 1087 series NCAT has 5 heating elements, a vent port added in the lower left side back wall to allow smoke generated during ignition a direct escape to the upper plenum, and the afterburner (5th element). The display PC board, keypad, and filter thermocouple were upgraded. The elements can be reconfigured for low amperage conditions.

Q: My NCAT unit is making a non-rhythmic "beeping" noise and the display is showing numbers and symbols on the red display windows that I do not recognize. What should I do?
A: Lower the control panel and disconnect the keypad wire harness (J2 on the red display board). If the non-rhythmic beeping stops and the numbers and symbols stop appearing on the red display, your keypad is shorting out and must be replaced. Refer to your service manual for part number.

Q: I received the incorrect supply voltage furnace. What should I do?
A: NCAT units are sold in 208V or 220-240V. Customers can either install a buck-boost transformer and step the voltage supply source up or down to match the furnace (a certified electrician will need to be consulted) or replace the heating elements in the unit. Call technical service for the correct replacement element part numbers. Please have the model and serial number of your NCAT furnace available for the technician.

Q: What electrical parts are different in the 208V NCAT versus the 220-240V NCAT?
A: The heating elements are the only electrical parts that are different in a 208V unit versus a 220-240V unit.

Q: I came in this morning and my NCAT will not heat.
A: Is it cold where the furnace is? If so, you will need to warm up the thermocouple. Use a lighter to warm up the tip. The furnace should start to heat right away. If this does not solve the problem, troubleshoot further.

ENVIRONMENTAL CHAMBERS

Q: Are IQ/OQ's (Installation Qualification/Operational Qualification) available for environmental chambers? If so, how do I optain a copy?
A: IQ/OQ's are available for the 680 series and 700 series. Part number 057-248-00 is the IQ/OQ for the 680 series line and part number 057-238-00 is the IQ/OQ for the 700 series line. List price: $100 each. Must be ordered with the unit.

Q: How many shelves can the 680/685 unit hold?
A: The 680 and 685 units are shipped with 2 shelves each. The shelves and brackets can be removed from the chamber in the 680 unit. A total of 13 shelves can physically fit in the chamber with minimal clearance with a spare part number of 680-6 for a shelf. The shelves in the 685 unit can be removed from the chamber, but the brackets cannot! The brackets are built into the side walls. Remember that to hold temperature and humidity parameters within the chamber all samples must have good air flow around them. Overpacking a chamber may cause poor results.

Q: What is meant by a "split refrigeration" system?
A: A split refrigeration system means that the evaporator is in a separate housing than the rest of the refrigeration system. The 700 and 702 units are split systems. The 708 units are not split systems.
